Ukraine has sent a note to Russia because of reports on the oil slick off the coast of Crimea

The Ukrainian foreign Ministry sent a note to Russia in connection with alleged oil spill in the Black sea off the coast of Crimea. This is stated in the statement published on Thursday, may 12, on the website of the foreign Ministry.

Ukrainian diplomats expressed concern over the appearance of information on the oil spill near Sevastopol, the result of which was allegedly “significantly polluted marine area”.

The foreign Ministry said that Kiev has “sovereign rights in the Maritime areas of the Crimea, and therefore has the right to demand from other States “compliance with their obligations under the prevention and liquidation of consequences of pollution in the marine areas of Ukraine”.

Of the oil spill on may 10, reported the website “Crimea. Realities” (project of the Ukrainian service “Radio Freedom”). The authorities of Crimea and Sevastopol this information is not confirmed.

Crimea and Sevastopol became part of Russia following a referendum in March 2014. Reunification with Russia was supported by 96.77 percent of Crimean residents and 95.6% of Sevastopol from the number of voters. The authorities of Ukraine and some other foreign countries refused to recognize the referendum and imposed sanctions. In Moscow underline that the accession of the region in accordance with international law.
