Eating nuts significantly reduces the risk of dying from heart disease or cancer, researchers say.

Scientists have found that the more nuts people consumed, the less they were likely to die within the next 30 years.

Daily consumption of about a handful of nuts reduces mortality from any cause by one-fifth from causes related to heart disease by almost 30 percent, and from cancer by 11 percent. Lovers nuts weigh less — they are less likely to be overweight.

Such conclusions were made by doctors from the cancer Institute in Boston, which used data from almost 120,000 men and women in the United States.

Study of food preferences, lifestyle and health status of the people showed that “Orihuela” leaner, less likely to smoke, more physically active, take vitamin supplements and consume more fruit and vegetables than the population on average.

“But the thing that regularly consume nuts are less likely to die from causes related to heart disease and cancer,” the authors write in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Mortality from all causes among fans of the nuts were below 11 percent in those who ate nuts once a week, 13 percent of those who ate them 3-4 times a week, and 15 percent of those who did it 5-6 times a week.
