The head of the CIA saw Russia’s “formidable opponent” and partner at the same time

Глава ЦРУ увидел в России "грозного соперника" и партнера одновременно

CIA Director John Brennan said Russia was “a formidable opponent”, but America can’t do without her cooperation in some areas such as settlement in Syria.

“Russia is a formidable opponent in many areas, at the same time there are areas where we need to be able to work together with Russia, especially in Syria,” said Brennan in the TV channel SBC News.

At the same time, the head of the CIA was not to blame Russia for the cyber attack on the servers of the US Democratic party, which led to the leak of information about the manipulations in the leadership of the party against rivals of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the primaries. However, according to him, it is necessary to closely monitor Russia’s activity in cyberspace.

“I believe that we must be highly attentive to what concerns Russia’s attempts to collect information in cyberspace. It is also important that they are going to do with this information”, — said the Director of the CIA.

On Friday, September 9, after 15 hours of negotiations the head of state Department John Kerry and Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov announced the agreement on the peaceful settlement in Syria. The negotiations lasted from February 2016, several rounds ended inconclusively.

The joint plan provides for a ceasefire, the establishment of a joint center for the delimitation of the parties, the cessation of attacks by Syrian aircraft. The strikes against terrorists will apply solely United States air force, and Russia will coordinate their actions. Provides for the establishment of a demilitarized zone around Aleppo and the resumption of humanitarian operations.

At the same time, the Director of national intelligence James Clapper said on 7 September that the recent hacker attacks on computer networks of the Democratic party was probably done by the Russians. Speaking at a conference of intelligence officers, he referred to President Barack Obama, who in late July said that “experts believe that this Russian”.

In his speech, Clapper referred to the interview Obama’s TV channel NBC, this at the end of July, in which the President admitted that Russia may try to influence the election campaign in the United States. Clapper added that “so do the Chinese and others, including acting in private”. He concluded that cyber attacks will become a big issue for the next presidential administration.
