We are talking about one part of it – the hippocampus.
A group of scientists from the max Planck Institute, after a series of experiments and observations, found that the brain size of women has changed.
They proved that at the time of ovulation it increases and in menstrual days begins to decrease. In the experiment there were about thirty women who regularly did an MRI of the brain, comparing these data with the level of estrogen in your blood. During the tests found that the hippocampus – the brain region that controls emotions and mood, increases in parallel with increasing levels of the hormone estrogen. This increase of the hormone happens during ovulation, and during menstruation, levels of estrogen in the body decreases. Therefore, during a cycle a woman’s brain decreases in size.
With this discovery, scientists want to understand the cause of mood swings and depression during menstruation. Still, the researchers want to know, does that change the brain on his mental capacity.
