The Czech Republic has shortened its official name.
The Cabinet of Ministers of the Czech Republic has authorized the Ministry of foreign Affairs to coordinate the UN alternate title, which became official – the Czech Republic (Czechia).
The changes took effect from 1 July. The Czech foreign Ministry explained that this alternative title, which was adopted for the convenience of the English-speaking world. At the same time, partners will be able to use the full name of the Czech Republic in parallel with Czechia.
However, not all the locals approve of such innovations. Opponents abbreviated name believe that their country in the international arena from now on may be confused with Chechnya.
