Spiegel: behind the scenes of the nuclear summit Obama changes the old bombs with new ones

Washington is the fourth and probably last nuclear security summit, writes Der Spiegel. All because of a disappointing policy of disarmament U.S. President Barack Obama, which does not prevent the United States to continue modernising its nuclear Arsenal, says the author of the article Marcus Becker.

In order to realize its vision of a world without nuclear weapons, us President Barack Obama in 2009 organized the first nuclear security summit, writes Der Spiegel. “This year it is already the fourth and probably the last time. It is obvious that the balance policy of disarmament Obama is disappointing”.

Today the world is much less free from the nuclear weapon than seven years ago, in what “is to blame and the current President of the United States”, says the author of the article Marcus Becker.

Becker acknowledges that the American leader in this way prevented the “intransigence” of Republicans and “aggressive policy” of Russia. “The biggest mistake Obama, however, made personally, by starting the modernization of the U.S. nuclear Arsenal”.

A program to upgrade U.S. nuclear weapons “has mutated into a terrible idea”, the author notes. Presumably, in the next thirty years, the U.S. government invests a billion dollars in the modernization of nuclear weapons.

In response, Russia has also begun “large-scale modernization of its nuclear forces”, writes Becker. The world is on the threshold of a “new arms race, the outlines of which are already visible”.

“What is all this? – asks the German reporter. – Nuclear weapons are useless in most modern conflicts. It never stopped Stripping the Syrian dictator Assad or the promotion of “Islamic state”*. It did not prevent the Russian annexation of Crimea, nor the invasion of Russia to Ukraine. Even if Moscow wants to destabilize Baltic NATO members, by applying the methods of waging a hybrid war, nuclear weapons are unlikely to be a persuasive deterrent”.
