High blood pressure in middle age may significantly increase the risk of developing vascular dementia, a new study. It is considered the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists from Sydney analyzed data from about 4.3 million people and found that high blood pressure was associated with a 62 percent increased risk of vascular dementia in people aged 30-50 years. And for people aged 51-70 years, such probability increased by 26 percent. In just a seven-year period of observation of vascular dementia has evolved from more than 11 thousand people.

According to scientists, the incidence of vascular dementia is increasing worldwide and in the future will create significant economic and social burden in developed and developing countries. To date, this disease affects about 9.3 million people worldwide.

Vascular dementia is caused by deterioration of blood supply of the brain due to the poor condition of the blood vessels. And the main reason for this form of dementia is considered a stroke.

Researchers believe that lowering blood pressure through exercise, diet or medication can reduce the risk of vascular dementia.

The study is published in scientific medical journal Stroke.
