Americans believe that Russia understands why NATO is deploying new systems in Europe.
Americans believe that the deployment of missile defence systems in Europe should not confuse Russia and her no sense as-that to react, because it does not carry a threat to her. This was stated in an interview with “Voice of America” Deputy assistant Secretary of defense Michael carpenter.
He noted that the deployment of NATO missile defense systems a common thing and has nothing to do with Russia.
“I don’t think NATO’s actions must cause some binding (reaction – ed.) from Russia. In fact, the plans of NATO, particularly regarding the deployment of missile defense systems in Romania and Poland, for a long time are no secret. We discussed them with our Russian partners during the last 3-4 years. We were quite Frank and tried them (the Russian Federation) to engage in the dialogue,” – said carpenter.
However, the Pentagon still associate the deployment of missile defense systems with the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
“As for the troops of the Alliance countries who are here on a rotational basis, and the presence of military equipment – it was a reaction to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and other regions, where Russia has violated all the fundamental principles of world order. Russia has trampled on almost all the basic international principles, which are very carefully created after world war II, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States”, – said the representative of the Pentagon.
According to him, is the protection from potential threats, and aggressive actions against Russia.
“The Alliance responds to these actions, the architecture of missile defence designed to protect against threats from the South. We have always been consistent in informing Russia on this issue and do not believe that it somehow affects strategic stability,” added carpenter.
Carpenter says that Russia actually understands the motives of establishing missile defense.
“They (the Russians – ed.) realize that the systems we deploy and our desire to achieve high readiness of the armed forces is a reflection of our determination to collectively defend our allies, as in the Baltic States, and in the territory of the Alliance as a whole. This is the basis of all that we plan to do in this part of the world, ” says carpenter.
