NATO is changing strategy in Europe.
NATO is changing its strategy in Europe and now moves to the containment of Russia, said the head of the Pentagon Ashton Carter.
However, he noted that the Alliance is ready to cooperate with Moscow.
Carter said that the Central theme of the summit in Warsaw on 8-9 July, will be the further development of a strong and balanced NATO’s approach towards Russia.
“Strong deterrence of aggression in Europe. So one of the important topics of the summit will be the promotion from support strategies (allies), which became the primary NATO’s response to unlawful conduct of Russia in the Crimea, to a phase of containment. The Alliance is not focused on it for a quarter of a century, and now is doing it,” said Carter.
In addition, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Alliance does not want a new cold war, which must remain in history, and set up a dialogue with Russia, because it is a component of European security.
“Russia is our largest neighbour and a component of European security. Therefore, maintaining dialogue is key,” said Stoltenberg.
