Azerbaijan took the last, 49-th place in the ranking of countries fit for citizens based on sexual orientation. A study prepared by the European branch of the International Association of lesbian and gay ILGA and published on Tuesday, may 10, at the organization’s website.

The authors of the report found that Azerbaijan meets only five percent of the criteria by which ILGA determines the conditions of social equality for a life of sexual minorities. In this case, 48-th and 47-th place was taken by Russia and Armenia, scoring eight and nine percent, respectively.

At the same time, the most suitable for the life of a gay country called Britain — it meets 86 percent of the criteria. It is followed by Belgium (83%) and Malta (77%).

ILGA pay attention that representatives of the LGBT community in Azerbaijan are the least protected from crimes motivated by hatred and discrimination, although homosexuality in the country and is not illegal. The authors of the study explain the low rating of the Republic a large number of criminal incidents motivated by homophobia and discriminatory statements of politicians.

“Every year hundreds of LGBT minorities are subjected to physical and psychological violence by their loved ones and others”, — said in an interview with The Guardian, the Azerbaijani activist Javid Nabiyev. He noted that the happen as murder and suicide, people are forced to live a double life or leave the country. Nabiev himself was forced to move to Germany after he ceased to conceal his homosexuality.

According to the representative of ILGA-Europe Bjorn van Roosendaal, “a common feature, which unites Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, that these countries want to distance themselves from the West, and the fight against homosexuality is at the center of this movement”.

In 2014 in Baku killed himself the leader of a local organization representing the interests of LGBT, ISA, Somali. It happened because of his conflict with relatives.
