Missile defense in Europe: new round of the cold war

ПРО в Европе: новый виток холодной войны

On the background of aggravation of Russian-American relations more often (in the media and among politicians from different countries) raised the issue of nuclear security in the world. The Pentagon believes that the advantages of Washington, speaking about the confrontation with Moscow. Primarily due to the fact that Europe is a few of us missile defense systems that supposedly can deter Russian aggression. By the way, the closest of them to the Russian border in Romania and Poland.

It would seem that this arrangement is supposed to make nuclear potential of Moscow is useless.

The US has a system of strategic PRO – GMD. It is able to intercept warheads of Intercontinental ballistic missiles. But that’s the problem – the latest test 18 interceptions showed only 9 hits on a notional target, i.e. the probability to shoot down enemy warhead is 50%. And this despite the fact that the tests are conducted in the most simple terms, a goal known in advance and only one. There is still however more modern American prototype – Aegis Ashore, which is now established in Romania and equipped in Poland, replacing the old installation. He had a chance to shoot down the rocket above, but it is provided that the interception will be carried out at the initial stage. If, for example, Russian launch missiles with submarines in the Pacific, Aegis Ashore with its radius of 700 km will be useless. And here we come to the sad conclusion – no one in the world there is no absolute protection from a nuclear attack. Technology has just reached such heights that in a minute to destroy hundreds of missiles at supersonic speed with a different trajectory in various parts of the world.

“It has long been argued that the missile defense system is necessary in order to make people feel safe, and the cost is not important. By and large, the perfect defense system is the one that destroys enemy missiles immediately after takeoff, the takeoff in the first 60-110 seconds of flight. But such interception is possible in the case of the missile defense system close to a potential enemy or in orbit. The SDI, as we know, involves the destruction of the missiles from space using chemical laser. The problem is that generals and politicians are not willing to admit that the US, Europe and Russia, and especially the rest of the country defenseless against a massive nuclear missile strike. The population will not understand. But if you and your opponent have more than a thousand media with multiple nuclear warheads, 200 vehicles, ranging from 200 to thousands of warheads, hit the target. Ie there’s no cure. But something must be done, that and trying to develop a missile defense system. Expensive, inefficient, but at least no one will accuse the generals, politicians and scientists inaction”, – shared his opinion of Director of Institute of political sociology Vyacheslav Smirnov.

Then why did the US continue to insist on the installation of additional systems in Europe? After more than a month of negotiations with Denmark and Norway. Here we must recall the times of the cold war. In conditions of nuclear parity with Washington and Moscow tried to secure as many points on the planet. It ended up that the missiles became too much, there was mutual assured destruction. Then the struggle went to another level, as the military presence slowly began to turn into a purely political influence. It seems that what is happening now can be called the residual effect.

Political analyst Ivan Preobrazhensky said that the anti-missile system in Europe is more of a symbol than an effective tool: “ABOUT the United States is a relic of the defensive solution, funding for which was allocated to R & d carried out, the equipment produced and to stop the process, even the Obama administration, which was skeptical about this idea, has failed. It is obvious that technically this initiative was absolutely meaningless, except that the United States really wanted to protect themselves from Iran and other countries possessing missile technology, but outside the system of international treaties. Now this defense system to the greatest extent symbolic solution designed to support NATO allies in Central and Eastern Europe. The most effective element of the system actually had to be radar, which was supposed to place in the Czech Republic and which is not. It’s hard for me to judge how even upgraded the system could threaten Russia and its allies. Most likely, no, if not to assume that the United States feared in the future that the Russian missile potential will be released from the control of the Kremlin that is unreal to imagine.”

Unfortunately, the Russian side initiative to refurbish the missile defense system in Poland and Romania (not to mention the possibilities for accommodation in Scandinavia) is perceived as almost an act of aggression. However, military experts do not hide the fact that Moscow, if necessary, can overcome this “shield”, i.e. de facto ABOUT is no threat. Both sides (USA and Russia) do not want to press the button, but that does not stop to speculate on this topic, as during the cold war. The reason for the US: “Russia will soon attack”. For Russia: “the Pentagon on our borders”. ABOUT for them is the most convenient way to spin the topic in your information field, to demonize the enemy.
