Scientists believe that heavy smokers can become a donor for a lung transplant.
However, new research has found quite strong arguments in favor of the “quality” of donor organs obtained from smokers, writes the Chronicle.Info with reference to Zdravoe.
Surprisingly, recipients of organs who receive the lungs of smokers, often find out about this fact then if you do find out, say experts.
Scientists from the U.S. came to the conclusion that donation of organs obtained from people who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day for more than 20 years are likely safe for the recipients.
Moreover, the analysis of lung transplant data from the United States between 2005 and 2011 confirms what surgeons transplantation already know: for many patients in a crowded waiting list, lungs from smokers received – much better than nothing.
“The recipients should be grateful for the opportunity for a lung transplant, regardless of who was the donor,” says Dr. Sharven Taghavi, a specialist in cardiovascular surgery from temple University in Philadelphia, who conducted a new study and recently presented it at the annual meeting of the Society of thoracic surgeons.
According to the new statistics, only 20% of smokers actually develop the disease, which can be considered as the worst effects of Smoking.
