Latvia looking for enemies, not the path of development, says ex-President

Latvia itself looking for enemies and not trying to find ways for further development, said in an interview to television channel LNT the former President of the Republic Andris Berzins.

“We moan that they are weak enough to be attacked. This is the best way to justify their inaction. We’re waiting for someone who will ensure our safety. We are looking for enemies, but not looking for ways for development”, — said the former head of state.

Berzins served as President of Latvia from 8 July 2011 to 8 July 2015. Latvia is member of EU and NATO since 2004. Policy in the country, often in their statements allow for the possibility of a Russian attack on Latvia.

While in neighboring Estonia is considered “highly unlikely” Russia’s use of military force against the Baltic States. Thus, the head of the Department of information Mikk Marran said that the Ministry of information has no reason to believe that Russia intends to oppose NATO.
