Japan ceased to pay contributions to UNESCO

Japan ceased to pay contributions to the budget of the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO). According to DW, we are talking about a total of about 42 million U.S. dollars.

According to the media, so Tokyo is protesting against the inclusion in the international register of documentary heritage “memory of the world” (Memory of the World) documents on the Nanjing massacre.

However, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida, confirming the information on termination payments, refused to recognize a direct link between that decision and the situation around the documents about the massacre, for the past few years complicate Japan’s relations with China.

It is known that in 2015 Japan has warned that it may stop funding UNESCO if the documents on the Nanjing massacre will be included in the register “memory of the world”. However, in the same year, UNESCO has taken this step, without proper, according to the Japanese side, the consultations with Tokyo and permission to study the materials.

Massacre in Nanjing – episode Sino-Japanese war 1937-1945 years, during which, in 1937, Japanese soldiers committed mass murders and rapes of the civilian population in Chinese Nanjing. The PRC estimates the number of victims 300 thousand people. Japan acknowledges the civilian casualties, but denies they should be numerous.
