Sequoia “the President” is the oldest tree on the planet. This giant is approximately 3240 years, which means that it was already quite old when Jesus was born. This tree is not only ancient, it is also one of the most extensive in the world – so huge that it is impossible to photograph in one shot.
“President” is not considered the largest tree – depending on the method of size measurement, it is assigned then the second, then the third place among the largest trees on the planet. Recent measurements produced by a group of scientist Steve Sillett, who measured not only the volume of the trunk, but all the major branches of “President”, and confirms that the Sequoia needs to take second place among the largest trees in the world. There are trees and higher, as for example, eucalyptus in Australia, but according to the total volume of the crown from the “President” few rivals.
Recent measurements have shown that the Sequoia “the President” in length reaches just over 75 metres is higher than two 9-storey buildings stacked on top of each other. The lower branches of the redwoods are so thick that they could be separate trees, but far from the smallest. “President” is often compared with the great tree of peace “by General Sherman,” and although “General” is definitely more of the “President”, “President” crown on the right thicker and more extensive: it is believed that more than two billion leaves. For more than three thousand years “the President” reached an impressive volume. As of 2012, the volume of the trunk near the ground was more than 28 meters.
The name Sequoia received in 1923 in honor of the 29th US President Warren Harding (1923 was the year of his death). Nearby is also the “Chief Sequoyah,” which is the 27th largest Sequoia and the so-called “Congress” – two medium sized sequoias that embodies the “House” and “Senate”.
Giant sequoias grow to such great sizes as they are resistant to parasites and diseases, mow other types of trees, and their succulent foliage and bark does not allow the fires to spread. The wood of these trees is so strong that even when a tree dies, it continues to be not just years, but hundreds of years without falling or deteriorating.
However, the Sequoia “the President”, despite his advanced age, is not going to die, on the contrary: each year a tree adds about one square meter of the total length of all branches, making the “President” the fastest growing tree in the world. Until recently, nobody could take a picture of this Behemoth, the tree just does not fit in any frame. A team of photographers from National Geographic have teamed up with scientists to make a similar frame for the first time in history.
