In Geneva opens 135-I IPU Assembly

About 700 parliamentarians from 138 countries, will participate in the 135th Assembly of the inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). They will consider urgent problems of today, focusing on human rights issues.

The Assembly will last until October 27. It is expected that in connection with celebrating this year the 40th anniversary of the creation of the IPU Committee on the rights of parliamentarians, the Assembly would appeal to lawmakers to show solidarity with their colleagues whose rights are violated.

The Secretariat of the stress that over four decades the Committee has reviewed more than 2,500 such violations in respect of parliamentarians from more than 100 countries, and now in his control are 250 such cases.

Individual attention will focus on women’s rights. The Assembly will be published on cases of violence against women parliamentarians.

The important place given to discussions on the role of parliaments in preventing interference in the Affairs of sovereign States and the promotion of parliaments in international cooperation in the implementation of the adopted UN goals of sustainable development.

The inter-parliamentary Union is the oldest international parliamentary organization in the world, it was established in 1889. Currently, it includes the parliaments of more than 160 countries, ten organizations have the status of associate members.
