Russia was in the list of the most “serious” countries

As it turned out, the Russians are not alone in their unsmiling — giving smiles right and left is not accepted in France, Japan and Iran.

A well-known stereotype: the Russians are unsmiling people. Common joke in Hollywood films, on this subject, come up with memes, but we do acknowledge it. A group of neuroscientists did a study: how to perceive smiling faces and faces without smiles in different cultures. An article with the results published in American scientific journal of Nonverbal Behavior, reports on October 13, portal Medialeaks.

It turned out that we are not alone in their unsmiling. In Iran, France and Japan, people smile much less than, for example, in the U.S. and other English-speaking countries and in Greece, Portugal and even China.

While scientists conducted an experiment: they showed people of different nationalities photographs of smiling, and the dark, and asked what they were individuals. Revealed the following: in some countries, the more you smile, the sillier they seem, in others, on the contrary, smile improves vis-a-vis opinion about your intellectual abilities. If in Japan, Iran, Russia, South Korea, India and France smiling man may find it stupid, then in Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, China and Australia — on the contrary.

Also depend on the country and the degree of confidence that causes a smile. Smiling people don’t seem sincere to residents of India, Indonesia, Maldives, Zimbabwe, Iran. For Russians a smile rather subconsciously inspires confidence, but to a much lesser extent than for the Swiss and Australians.

Because man forms a habit under the influence of society, focusing in their non-verbal reactions to what the reaction of others, the Russians, like the Iranians, from childhood accustomed to the fact, that in vain to smile in the company of strangers is not necessary. After all, you really can either be taken for a fool, or to decide what you’re canny.
