Fruits and vegetables can protect the elderly from hip fractures

Фрукты и овощи могут защитить пожилых людей от переломов бедра

A new study found that older people who eat no more than 1 serving of fruits and vegetables have an increased risk of hip fracture.

Vassiliki Benetou and colleagues from the University of Athens in Greece studied the connection between eating fruits and vegetables and frequency of hip fractures in people 142018 (116509 women) aged 60 years and older.

The researchers found that compared with people who consume 3-5 servings of vegetables and fruit a day, people who daily consume less than 1 serving of these products are 1.39 times higher than the risk of hip fracture. However, eating more than 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day is not associated with a reduction in the risk of fractures.

“Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables can help reduce the risk of hip fracture in older people”, concluded the study authors.

The study results were published in the “Journal of Bone and Mineral Research”.
