Deficiency of this vitamin leads to Alzheimer’s disease

Дефицит этого витамина приводит к болезни АльцгеймераScientists conducted a global study which revealed that vitamin D deficiency leads to serious diseases.

Low levels of vitamin D are associated with a rapid decline in cognitive function among older adults, thereby exposing them to increased risk of development of Alzheimer’s disease, warn the us scientists from Rutgers University in new Jersey, writes the Chronicle.Info with reference to NovostiN.

Regardless of race or ethnicity, underlying cognitive abilities, as well as many other risk factors, vitamin D insufficiency was associated with a significantly more rapid decline in episodic memory and Executive functions that may entail an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, experts say.

During the study, researchers examined vitamin D levels and change in cognitive function in an ethnically diverse group of 382 older persons. The status of vitamin D was defined as follows: the deficit – less than 12 ng/ml, insufficient number of 12 ng/ml to 20 ng/ml, adequate levels of 20 ng/ml to 50 ng/ml, with a maximum of 50 ng/ml or higher.

Study participants had a median age 75.5 years, and almost 62% were women. Over 5 years of observation of people deficient in vitamin D deficient individuals have experienced cognitive decline 2-3 times faster than people with adequate levels of vitamin D in the blood serum.
