Recently we told you how the autopilot technology Ford and Tesla to cope with navigation in snowy weather. Automatic driving Ford is using the lidar system for orientation in space. Such systems allow you to navigate among the snow and in the dark. Ford tested the Fusion Hybrid technology at its test site in Arizona in almost complete darkness. At least the employees had to use night vision goggles to see where the autopilot is moving the machine.
Usually in autopilot technology uses cameras and radars in conjunction with the lidar system for orientation in space. However, as stated by Ford, the lidar system may to cope with navigation in the dark. According to the head of the project on autopilot Ford, cars with lidar systems do not depend on sunlight and can move in the dark as in daylight.
Lidar systems provide 3D maps of the surrounding area by means of lidar pulses. Because of this, the autopilot car Ford managed to complete the whole test track without a single error.
