According to the Minister of defense Hans Peter Doskocil, the Austrian authorities expect that after the closing of the Balkan route a significant proportion of migrants will attempt to enter the EU via Italy. According to some reports, the construction of a fence on both sides of the main crossing point of the Austrian-Italian border has already begun.
The European Commission has already expressed concern about the plans of Austria. “Any introduction of control within the Schengen area must be justified and proportional, therefore, the European Commission will carefully assess the situation. In particular, the European Commissioner for migration, home Affairs and citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos will hold in the near future a phone conversation with the head of the Ministry of internal Affairs of Austria,” – said the official representative of the European Commission Natasha Berto.
