A third of U.S. Teens admitted having extra weight

Треть подростков США признали имеющими лишний вес

Doctors from the Clinical research Institute Duke (USA) reported higher rates of childhood obesity in the country, in spite of the past 30 years measures. The study authors published in the journal Obesity.

The researchers analyzed data from the National study of health and nutrition. They concluded that in 2013-2014 33.4 per cent of children aged 2-19 years were overweight. Of these, 17.4% were obese.

These indicators practically did not differ from data obtained in previous reporting periods (e.g., 2011-2012). Meanwhile, compared with 1999 and later years, scientists have noticed a rise in the number suffering from overweight children.

Obesity grade II (BMI 35 lots) in 2012-2014 had 6.3 per cent of children, III degree obesity (BMI greater 40) 2.4%. In 2009-2010, the obesity of the second degree was 5.9 percent of children, and III degree — at 2.1 percent.

“An estimated 4.5 million children and adolescents have severe obesity that requires new and intensive effort to steer them towards a healthier lifestyle,” said co-author conducted research Ashley Skinner.

BMI is defined as the ratio of body weight (in kilograms) by the square of body length (in metres). For example, with a body weight of 67 kg and height 1.7 m BMI is 23. The norm is a BMI of equal to 18,5—24,99. The index below 18.5 is talking about the underweight, above 25 is about its abundance.
