In fact a clear and present danger to peace and freedom in our country comes not from the machinations of foreign capitals, and from a presumptuous, arrogant groupthink that has seized the inhabitants of the Imperial City. The fact is that the Assad regime was cast in the same form as the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Both grew out of military coups in the postwar period, and both preached secular Arab nationalism. Their goal was to stimulate economic progress and revitalization of the Arab culture under the guidance of a strong state and effective public sector. Which in practice meant rule by economic bribes and brutal suppression of dissidents by the methods of a police state.
However, these States were opposed to jihadism and religious fanaticism in the face of Wahhabism, exported from Saudi Arabia in the form of various offshoots of al-Qaeda,***, and now supporting the death of the Caliphate established by the Islamic state**** in the lands of the Sunnis in Western Iraq and the Euphrates river valley in Syria.
The Assad regime in Syria was actually the guardian of religious pluralism. The Assad family comes from a religious minority — the Alawite branch of Shia Islam centered in the coastal North-Western provinces. The advent of this regime to power broke the century old dominance of the Sunni majority population, and therefore welcomed by other minorities, including Christians, Druze, Jews, Kurds and countless other.
It is undeniable that the Assad regime was cruel, but in this sense he was also absolutely identical to the other middle Eastern governments — before and after it.
Of course, the worst of them is Saudi Arabia. There you can be beheaded for apostasy, adultery, drug possession or insulting the king. Last year they cut off 200 heads — at a time when the war Party classifies Riyadh among their indispensable allies in the battle against much less effective otrabotala goals of the Islamic state.
So when in 2011 Syrian uprising began, Washington had no reason to embark on one of the sides. Certainly not more than they were in Libya. But in both cases via the mainstream media — especially CNN — various research organizations and official agencies skillfully conducted false propaganda about the supposedly imminent massacre of civilians on the part of existing regimes.
The ensuing slide on the slippery slope of destruction of the regime not long to wait. The first of these was the so-called “Free Syrian army” (FSA). But she was a product of Turkey and Washington advocates “regime change”, who wanted to remove Assad. Erdogan wanted to eliminate Assad because he did not want to oppress numerous Kurdish population living along the border with Turkey. Motivation Washington was no less disgusting.
