Volkswagen introduced a new generation of engines

Volkswagen представил новое поколение двигателейThe new engine will appear on the models of VW in Europe by the end of this year.

The Volkswagen group presented at the international Symposium on propulsion engineering, in Vienna, a new generation engine series EA211 TSI, which received the name prefix evo. The unit has received a turbocharger with variable geometry and now works in the Miller cycle.

Turbocharger with variable geometry of the impeller is already being used on the 911 Turbo motor and “fours” Cayman and Boxster. However, the new motor of the group brought the technology into more affordable models. As they say in “Volkswagen”, similar turbine will be used on public vehicles with internal combustion engines with spark ignition for the first time. The Miller cycle has also moved motor 2.0, which is used in the new Audi A4.

The new engine – a 1.5-litre petrol unit, which is currently available in two variants of capacity – 130 and 150 horsepower. The maximum torque of the first of them reaches 200 Nm (for other motor data yet). It is achieved at 1300 rpm and is available up to 4500 rpm.

For comparison, the previous 125 HP engine 1.4 TSI issued the same 200 Nm, but at 1400-4000 rpm. The manufacturer does not specify the exact characteristics, however, clarifies that the new “Quartet” of 10 per cent over the old 1.4 TSI. This motor, for example, “Golf” version with the “mechanics” in the combined cycle consumed about 5.2 liters per hundred kilometers.

The feature of Miller’s cycle is different duration of cycles of operation: intake valve closes later than on the conventional motor, although it is open for some time in the beginning of the compression cycle. In the engine increased the compression ratio to 12.5:1, a new system of direct fuel injection is increased to 360 bar pressure, and a completely redesigned cylinder head.

The new engine will appear on the models of VW in Europe by the end of this year.
