USA shamefully abandoned the Pacific: a forecast by James Stavridis

The former commander of NATO forces in Europe James Stavridis in an article for Foreign Policy said that the US is waiting for your own Brexit, if they reject the TRANS-Pacific trade agreement (TPP).

“There was one last chance to pull off this deal to make it to the final before leaving Obama session of Congress after the November elections. Given that both presidential candidates call for the rejection of this agreement or the processing of those items, which are internal competitiveness is under threat, it can turn into the American version Brexit’and only from the Pacific region,” says Stavridis.

Former NATO commander believes that the United States needed the Pacific as well as UK – EU. According to him, it’s not so much the trade benefits as in geopolitics.

“For the UK leaving the EU has become a serious geopolitical mistake, and for US it is the same mistake to abandon (TTP) and actually walk away with a leading position in Asia,” he says.

Stavridis notes that this agreement will allow the US, through its allies in the region – Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam – to keep an eye on China, which, of course, would oppose (TTP).

“If the United States refuses from the TPP, China in this situation will be the clear winner and loudest to celebrate will be an increasingly authoritarian and seeking to dominate the region, the President XI Jinping,” he says.

Stavridis expresses dissatisfaction with the fact that China is allegedly ready to take full control of all South China sea and become a major political player in the region.

“Asia, dominated by China, does not serve the national interests of the United States for a number of reasons, especially considering the economic viability of the region,” he said.

The TPP was signed in October of 2015, officially signed in February 2016, but is still not ratified. Members of the partnership are the 12 countries, the initiator of the conclusion made in the USA.

Earlier this week, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on to ratify the agreement as soon as possible, probably fearing that after the elections in the United States with them can cause problems because of the disapproving attitude to the TTP by both Hillary Clinton and Donald trump.
