Ukraine is unlikely to be able to engage in the processing and storage of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) — for this the country lacked the money and competence. About it in conversation with “ru” said the first Deputy Chairman of state Duma Committee on energy Igor Ananskih.
“Their funds for the creation of a full range of storage of the spent fuel from Ukraine. Even if Western partners Kiev will find the money, the implementation of this project will take a long time,” said the MP.
According to him, apart from the financial issue is an issue of safety. “It’s a huge risk not only for the environment but also for humans. Potential emissions of hazardous substances into the environment,” said Ananskikh.
On 21 October the Minister of energy and coal industry of Ukraine Igor Nasalik said that Kiev 2017 will not pay Russia annually $ 200 million for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
Ukraine will be a dry storage where you can dispose of radioactive waste from all nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the country, said Nasalik. In the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP (1986 happened here is one of the largest accidents in the history of nuclear energy) now there is a site for storing nuclear fuel of wet type, but she is not able to accept waste in the long term.
Representatives of organizations European nuclear industry held in Brussels in early July, the seminar expressed concern about Ukraine’s plans to build such storage. In their opinion, the project is contrary to standards of nuclear safety and risks of accidents.
