For an incredible act of faith.
Sometimes for the sake of faith people are going to incredible things. This can be said about the Indian ascetic (sadhu) Amar Bharati. The man showed incredible humility, will power, and faith. In 1973, he raised his hand above his head in order to honor the God Shiva. Now 43 years old, he does not lower it.
Of course, these years have not been easy for him. In fact, Amar sacrificed his hand for the sake of faith. Moreover, in a very painful way. Over the years, the hand froze in an unnatural position. It is fully atrophied. However, before the hand went numb, Amar was experiencing terrible pain.
It is believed that such an act he committed in order to finally detach himself from worldly temptations. Some argue that this is a gesture for peace and harmony in the world. However, Amar does not see his act nothing supernatural and explains that the same did many saints before him, and he just continues the tradition. In India it is called “unhuman tapasya” and denotes the type of service, when the ascetic spends part of his body to God.
