The us Senate voted against the draft resolution restricting military cooperation of the USA with Saudi Arabia.
The authors of the document were Republicans Rand Paul and Mike Lee and Democrats Chris Murphy and al Franken. They criticized the policy of Washington, which approved the sale to Riyadh of weapons by more than $1 billion. However, this initiative did not gain enough votes in the Senate, according to Reuters.
According to some senators, building up supplies of weapons to Saudi Arabia undermines stability in the region. The Kingdom is headed by the fighting of the Arab coalition against the rebels-Houthis in Yemen, and helps allied countries (e.g., Bahrain) and Syrian opposition.
According to the Center for international policy, the amount of transactions on sale of US arms to Saudi Arabia under President Barack Obama amounted to more than $115 billion — a record amount of more than 70 years.
