For the Soviet Union it was a real shock.

In 1959, the Soviet Union held a display of clothing by Christian Dior.

That show caused a stir among the Soviet population, because the models differed from the usual drab clothes.

The photo shows how people are looking at French women as aliens. Even the foreign models really stand out against the drab, dark background of the people behind the “iron curtain”.
