Estonia would host the meeting of leaders of Russia and the United States, according to the candidate from the Centrist party Mailis Reps. This writes the news portal ERR. According to the politician, “small countries have always played an important peacekeeping role in the world diplomacy”, therefore, Estonia has the chance to open a new page in contemporary international relations.
“As President I would aim to invite to Estonia and put in one table the presidents of Russia and USA in order to open a new page in international relations,” said Reps.
The politician cited several examples from history when a small-sized States served as a mediator in the communication of the great powers, in particular, she mentioned the meeting of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Reykjavik in 1986, as well as meetings at the highest level in Switzerland, the report said.
In the foreign policy program Miley’s reps also noted the desire to improve the relations of Estonia with Russia. “We need state leaders who oppose its Eastern neighbor at the first opportunity, and the leaders, the purpose of which is to restore and maintain good neighborly relations”, — quotes its words the portal ERR.
Not spared reps in his statement, and the prospects for economic cooperation with the Eastern neighbour, in particular, she appreciated the opportunities that could give the Russian market for Estonian goods.
