The Pentagon is worried about the “open sky” for Russian aircraft

The US already used to a quiet life and there it is again!

The Treaty on open skies began to cause concern in the Pentagon because of the hardware update on Russian planes, but Russia has not gone beyond the Treaty, and America, instead of complaining, you just need to do the same, says Defense One.

After Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower decided not to take the path that leads to cosmic war. Instead, he decided in favor of greater transparency and openness, says Defense One, reports Inotv.

The U.S. has concluded an agreement with the USSR, which allowed the satellites fly freely over the territory of both countries. This decision was completely justified, says the publication, since the USSR was a closed state and American politicians and intelligence from the agreement only won. Then there was the draft Treaty on open skies, which would allow aircraft equipped with the apparatus for shooting, fly over the territory of both countries. But at the time, the Soviet Union never would have to go.

The negotiations began only in Gorbachev’s time and was completed later, in 2002, with the signing of the Treaty on open skies. “But times change, Vladimir Putin is not Mikhail Gorbachev, and Russia gave a strong response to NATO expansion,” writes One Defense.

Many American military officers began to voice their concerns about this Treaty. “This agreement has become a critical component in the field of Russia’s ability to collect intelligence on the United States,” – said the head of the United States Strategic command, Admiral Cecil heini.

The cause of concern was a new set of sensors that will be equipped with Russian planes. The publication notes that the use of all equipment for these purposes agreed upon by both parties, the technology available on the market available and significantly inferior to the newest developments. Moreover, images obtained from satellites, as a rule, superior to the resolution of the images made with these planes.

The agreement allows you to install more modern equipment. In particular, the Russian side is going to switch from film media to digital. However, the quality remained unchanged. However, the chief intelligence Directorate of the U.S. Department of defense Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart believes that the new equipment will provide Russia with “significant” advantage.

The edition considers, that in this case, blame is not the Kremlin, and the Pentagon. It could upgrade its equipment, but did not. And the question here is not about money, since all it will cost US 45 million dollars – not such a big amount, when you consider that America is going to spend 3 billion on NATO forces in Europe. The problem is that the Treaty on open skies is not high on the list of priorities of the Pentagon.

“Bet on mutual transparency still remains a wise and viable option for the United States – says Defense One. – It makes sense to put the aircraft on the US with digital equipment, not to complain about the shortcomings of mutual transparency”.

On 2 March the Director of the intelligence Department of the Ministry of defence (RUMO) USA Vincent Stewart stated that Russia has the equipment that allows you to gather key intelligence about the infrastructure and capabilities of the United States, giving Moscow “a significant advantage”.

Stuart spoke about the capabilities of Russian intelligence after the issue of the open skies Treaty, a concern which was expressed earlier. Then the head of strategic command of the armed forces of the United States Cecil heini said that Russian aircraft have improved surveillance capabilities, according to the terms of the open skies Treaty allows Russia to exercise greater oversight over the USA and other countries.

However, as the newspaper OPINION, the statements of the American military on the matter are irrelevant to real intelligence capabilities of Russia.

The debate surrounding the use of the DON broke out after the conversion of Russia to the Advisory Commission on open skies, acting at the headquarters of the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, with the certification of the Tu-154, which has a digital electro-optical sensor. As stated by the representative of the us state Department, the U.S. plans with the involvement of technical experts and lawyers to examine the question of whether the Russian Tu-154 to use this equipment when performing Supervisory operations.
