Also known as Timur, Tamerlane was famous Turko-Mongol conqueror and military leader. In the second half of the 14th century, he led a brutal military campaign in Western, southern and Central Asia, the Caucasus and southern Russia. Tamerlane became the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire and the crushing defeat of the Delhi Sultanate.
