The state language centre (SLB) of Latvia adopted a decision to fine the mayor of Riga nil Ushakov for the use of the Russian language Riga city Council social networks (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).

About this Ushakov said on 27 July on his Facebook, noting that he learned about the penalty from the CGA and from journalists.

The mayor of Riga did not specify the size of the imposed penalty. He said the decision of the CGA illegal and promised that it will be challenged. In addition, Ushakov pointed out that in social networks, the Riga city Council will communicate, as before, that is, at least in three languages: Latvian, Russian and English.

“The language centre would like to wish to really engage with what they do – for example, think about how in Latvian called “pokemon”. Anything else they still can not” – said Ushakov.

In may 2015, the CGA was already interested in Russian language speech spoken by the mayor of Riga on 9 may. In January of that year Ushakov CGA fined €50 for the campaign before the election in a personal tweet in Russian.
