Mayor of London elected a Muslim Sadiq Khan.
Mayor of London elected labour MP Sadiq Khan, he will go down in history as the first Muslim in this post.
As informs television channel Sky News, according to the results of the elections in 13 of the 14 London constituencies Khan scored 43%, its main competitor, aristocrat and multimillionaire Zac goldsmith – 37%. Khan got more votes than goldsmith, and as a “backup” candidate, which ensured him the victory.
Voters need to give two votes for candidates from the General list of candidates: first — for “a primary” candidate, who they would prefer and the second is the one they would have chosen if it were not the first, so-called “second choice”. If any of the candidates gains a simple majority of votes (50% plus one vote), he shall be deemed elected. If not, then from the list remain only the two candidates who obtained the largest number of votes and amount of votes each of them be added to the votes cast for them as for the candidate’s “second choice”. Thus without holding a separate second round the winner is revealed.
The official results of elections of the mayor will be announced at a special ceremony on Friday night.
