The end of an era VHS: closed production of VCRs

Company Funai Electric announced that later this month it covers units engaged in production of VCRs. Until 2016, this Japanese Corporation was the only one in the world who are still continuing to produce these devices of the era of VHS. In a press release in connection with the decision reportedly to collect VCRs to Funai Electric began in 1983 on the shelves they appeared under the brand of Sanyo.

The decision to discontinue the VHS was taken in connection with unprofitability of production. Until 2015 the sale to Funai Electric of up to 15 million devices a year, and in 2015 they could sell only 750 thousand. The first cassette standard VHS was introduced in 1976. The interest in this format began to subside in the early 2000s when they were replaced by the first DVD, HD DVD and then Blu-Ray discs. The last film, officially released on VHS, became in 2007 the film “Eragon”, based on the eponymous fantasy novel by Christopher Paolini.

VHS cassette, worth more than 1 million rubles

Despite the formal “death” of the VHS format, the VHS collectors will be in demand for at least another ten years. In the online eBay store, anyone can purchase an extremely rare edition of the cartoon “Beauty and the Beast 1992 – the price of the lot in rubles is about 1.2 million rubles.
