Steinmeier fears the collapse of the EU

The Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung stated on the new calls for EU members.

“Slogans “Perpetual peace on the continent” and “Europe has no alternative” is simply not tenable,” said Steinmeier.

“The financial crisis, the wave of refugees heading to Europe, and the shock of the British referendum pushed Europe into a zone of turbulence,” said Steinmeier.

He also drew attention to the fact that more and more countries-EU members criticize Brussels.

“Even the most devoted supporters of Europe now see that we need to re-convince people… If we don’t know how to appreciate the EU, it will come to naught,” – said Steinmeier.

In this regard, the German foreign Ministry will launch a kind of European tour to discuss with the public the future of the EU.

“This does not mean that we want to look at the EU through rose-colored glasses, on the contrary, we want to hear the criticism to know what is right and what is wrong with Europe,” said Steinmeier.
