Spain found a huge hoard of Roman coins

В Испании нашли огромный клад с римскими монетами

A rare treasure was discovered in the South of Spain. According to the newspaper El Pais, during construction works in the town of Tomares (near Seville) at a depth of one meter were found 19 Roman amphorae, bronze coins.

Their total weight was 600 kg. According to archaeologists, this is the most amazing treasure found on the territory of Spain, and perhaps worldwide. Researchers have never been faced with so many almost identical coins. They date back to the 4th century ad On one side of the minted image of the emperors, on the other – the various Roman characters. Their quality suggests that they were not used. Experts suggest that the coins have been collected for taxes or the military.

They were discovered in an unusual amphora, which differ in their size from those used, for example, wine or grain. Perhaps these vessels were manufactured specifically for the storage of coins. 10 of them have survived intact.

Currently, all findings are presented in the Archaeological Museum of Seville.
