In the UK there are few left living witnesses of the terrible events of the Second world war, and they still remember with horror how German military aircraft day and night, bombed British cities, especially London.
Since autumn 1940 and may 1941, killed tens of thousands of civilians, destroyed about a million homes.
To the 75th anniversary of the end of the bombing “Blitz” (eng. The Blitz) the photo Agency Getty has combined historic black and white photos that show the scale of destruction, with modern color images. These works will be exhibited in mid-may, the beginning of festive events in London.
On one of the photos you can see the completely destroyed bus amid peaceful street, Portman-street, near the famous Marble arch. On the other — in front of Buckingham Palace are Asian tourists, and before them a huge gaping crater. In the old, venerable Westminster Abbey ceiling collapsed, and over London bridge rises into the sky a huge column of smoke.
The war also affected the London underground where people took refuge during air attacks. In October 1940 a German bomb hit the house, located near Bounds Green station, in the Northern area newly refurbished and well furnished. While at the station collapsed part of the platform, and killed 16 people.
In the autumn of 1940 over London and the night flew an average of 200 planes that dropped on the city of a hundred bombs. In may 1941 the onslaught weakened, as it took the bombers to Adolf Hitler in other places. Londoners could breathe more freely.
