New York Times: Putin is rapidly turning Russia into a “country outlaw”

Russia because of the actions of its leader, Vladimir Putin, is fast becoming a “country outlaw,” writes the New York Times. For example, Moscow has been accused of war crimes in Syria. In addition, the joint investigation team said that the plane, carrying out flight MH17, was shot down by anti-aircraft missile system brought from Russian territory.

New York Times: Путин стремительно превращает Россию в "страну вне закона"

Vladimir Putin is rapidly turning Russia into a “country outlaw, “writes the New York Times. At the same time, being one of the five permanent members of the UN security Council Russia bears special responsibility to monitor compliance with international law. However, its behaviour in Ukraine and Syria not only violates the rules aimed at promoting peace but also contrary to common human decency, believes the edition.

This bitter truth is twice confirmed on Wednesday, the article says. First, the investigation group led by the Netherlands, came to the conclusion that anti-aircraft missile complex shot down Malaysian plane over Ukraine in July 2014, was sent to “separatists” from Russia, and there also it then returned. Second, the Russian and Syrian warplanes, according to the publication, destroyed two hospitals in rebel controlled part of Aleppo, and it was done within the occurrence that threatens the lives of more than 250 thousand people.

Some Western officials have accused Russia of war crimes, and these charges can be brought against Moscow “international channels“, even if the Russian side will block a formal appeal to the international criminal court, the newspaper writes. In addition, said New York Times should consider the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.

Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said recently that his government is determined to prosecute the Moscow and those people who fired a missile at the airliner, flying flight MH17. According to the newspaper, the United States should support Ukraine in its “campaign for justice“.

Putin considers himself a man who is on a mission to restore Russia’s greatness. And Russia, of course, can be a great power to do good. However, his unscrupulous behavior – the slaughter of civilians in Syria and Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea, computer hacks of U.S. government agencies, the destruction of dissent in his own country – makes it clear that the last thing he wants is to become a constructive partner in the search for peace“–sums up the New York Times.
