Grapefruit juice can be dangerous to health, and in combination with some drugs even lethal. Doctors have compiled a list of medications with which the use of juice is not recommended.
Scientists from the University of the province of South-Western Ontario has published a new study according to which 43 of the drug in combination with grapefruit juice can cause serious health problems. In 2008, this list included only 17 of the medicines, but it now appears that the risk of complications is much higher.
“The probability of death may be small, but don’t underestimate the risks,” explains one of the authors Professor David Bailey. – Doctors should know and inform their patients that the number of new drugs may adversely affect health.”
In grapefruit juice contains furanokumariny that interfere with the normal dissolution of drugs and increase the toxicity of drugs and influence their effect on the body. This, in turn, can lead to overdose or more serious side effects. In particular, it could trigger heart problems, kidney failure, muscle breakdown, difficulty with breathing and even the occurrence of blood clots.

Single grapefruit or glass of juice can have an effect on the body during the day. Other citrus fruits such as lemons, tangerines and pomelos can have the same effect. Completely secure only certain varieties of sweet oranges.
To prevent harmful effect, researchers are advised to carefully read the instructions for medication and to seek the advice of a doctor.
