One of the main tasks of medical professionals is how to help veterans of the military actions to alleviate the chronic pain that will last a lifetime. A new study by American scientists suggests that the practice of meditation can help veterans to rid themselves of chronic pain.

Meditation allows a person to take the pain and react to pain with less stress and emotional reactivity, explain the experts. Eventually, the person learns to self-manage their chronic pain.

Damage to the musculoskeletal system are the most common cause of pain in veterans. Chronic pain is also common in combatants who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.

During the pilot study 4 the veteran studied the practice of meditation, while 5 veterans didn’t. Participants returned from a Warzone with chronic pain and mild traumatic brain injury.

Patients attended meditation sessions twice a week and was self-medicating at home. By the end of the eighth week, the subjects gained useful skills of mindfulness and awareness, which allowed them to use meditation as a tool to help manage pain.

While the most commonly used method of dealing with chronic pain are opioids, experts believe that they are a short term solution, while meditation allows you to control the pain for a long time.
