Kiev airport “Borispol” can be renamed in honor of a devotee of the Russian Orthodox Church anathematized Hetman Ivan Mazepa, said the Ministry of infrastructure of Ukraine.

According to authorities, the most voted – 12768 – man voted for the Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The Creator of the helicopter Igor Sikorsky voted 9297 people, for the artist Kazimir Malevich – 9224, the aircraft designer Oleg Antonov – 6385. Against assigning the airport, someone else made 6057. Less of the total votes (335) scored lyricist of the anthem of Ukraine Pavlo Chubynsky.

According to the historical information, Mazepa (1639-1709), born into a family of nobles in the Kiev province of the Polish Kingdom, and later was among the “polevyh” nobles of king Jan Casimir. Then Mazepa made a career already in the Ukraine and the Moscow throne: 1687 he became the Hetman of Zaporizhia Troops left Bank of the Dnieper, and from 1704 – Zaporozhian both sides of the Dnieper. In 1700 he was awarded the title of Chevalier of the order of St. Andrew and was one of the closest associates of Peter I.

In 1708 Mazepa secretly sided with Sweden, which led to a war with Russia. However, after the defeat of Charles XII at Poltava in 1709, he fled to the Ottoman Empire and died in the city of Bendery. For betraying the oath in Russia he was tried by a civil penalty of deprivation obtained from the king of titles and awards, and the Russian Orthodox Church has betrayed Mazepa anathema. In addition, Peter I ordered to make only one instance of the Order of Judah, which was supposed to reward the exiled Hetman for treason.
