Independent journalist sentenced to 3 years in prison in Chechnya

Gerieva detained in Chechnya on 16 April, when he went from Kurchaloy in Grozny. According to him, three armed men took off with his taxi, hit the head and dragged you to his car. Then taken into the woods where they were beaten, tortured, threatened, claiming that he wanted to leave to join the group “Islamic state”. Then, having selected personal belongings, the journalist was taken to the cemetery on the outskirts of Kurchaloy. According to investigators, it was there that he was arrested with marijuana in the backpack, after which he confessed to possession of drugs.

In court the journalist has refused to testify, saying that gave them under pressure. However, the court in attention has not taken.

Still the case Gerieva was not disclosed at the request of his family, who feared increased harassment.

Human Rights Watch urges the Russian authorities to provide immediate review of the case Gerieva and stop repressions in Chechnya.
