“This important step comes after four years of work on the engineering phase of the program and marks the beginning of the final stages of development, followed by production. The construction of the first weapon is scheduled for fiscal year 2020, after which comes a large-scale production”, — stated in the message.

NNSA Director Frank Klotz noted that the modification of the B61 bomb is the oldest of the components that are in the Arsenal of the United States, adding that the upgrade will allow operating the system for at least another 20 years.
