Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite approved with his signature the law on introduction in the country of universal conscription on a permanent basis.
The bill, previously agreed upon with the State Council of defense, provides for the transfer of the Lithuanian army from the fully professional to the system of mixed type.

Under the new law, the army would consist of professional soldiers and conscripts.
