Under the new law, the army would consist of professional soldiers and conscripts. Lithuania abandoned universal conscription in 2008, but in 2015 he restored it for 5 years due to the acute geopolitical situation. As notes a press-service of the President of Lithuania, annually in mandatory military service will be raised from 3.5 to 4 thousand people.

Currently more than 3.8 thousands of Lithuanian volunteers have already expressed their desire to join the ranks of the armed forces. According to preliminary calculations, the transition of the army to the system of mixed type can manage the budget of Lithuania 30-35 million .
