Indonesia’s President on Wednesday signed a decree allowing to resort to chemical castration and death penalty as the highest punishment of pedophiles.
Indonesia has tightened the punishment for rapists: judge will decide on the death penalty and chemical castration in cases where the offence is committed against children.
Under the new rules, made public on Wednesday by decree of President Joko Widodo on the protection of children, rapists, convicted of sexual abuse of minors, which led to death, disease, loss of reproductive function or mental disorder may be sentenced to death or life imprisonment.
Persons convicted for crimes against sexual inviolability of minors, also can be forced into chemical castration and wearing implanted chips which will allow the authorities to track their movements.
Officials said the new penalties were designed to create a strong deterrent to prevent such crimes and allow judges to render a decision on the application of more stringent punishments.
A new regulation was enacted in response to public outcry against the gang rape and murder last month on the island of Sumatra, 14-year-old girl.
The government stated that after the murder determined to take a tougher stance in relation to crimes against sexual integrity. This step is part of a wider campaign against crime, President Widodo.
Widodo announced that he signed a decree for the release of “state of emergency of sexual violence” in the country with a population of 250 million people. The government has not yet published data that confirm this assertion. New measures take effect immediately.
