There is a perception that after the winter and late fall fish needs no bait, cold spring water she is extraordinary zhor. So I decided to test this conventional wisdom by going in the Leningrad oblast. Here from the banks of the rapid river Ust ‘ -Kapsha that flows in the Tikhvin district of the Leningrad region, offers spectacular views that beckon anglers.
Local residents are not in a hurry to reveal the secrets of “fishing spots”, and so I had to search independently, using the whole fishing experience. Nevertheless, as a result, my catch was significant. But even more outstanding get the experience in the manufacture of various lures and baits.
On a narrow, albeit deep in the river near the village of Eremina Gora, I spent time with use. It is not necessary to have a boat, good fishing spots is literally under every Bush, and as a variant, it is possible to catch the pedestrian suspension bridges that connects both banks. Sitting comfortably, I used a complex bait with a large number of components, hoping to attract primarily larger fish. However, the first experience was not positive.
When choosing other places in Ust-CAPSA I acquired the knowledge that is hidden in every way here on the river with a mixed flow, where there are bays, backwaters and rapids, effective fishing with the use of high-speed feeding has been observed in areas without currents, at a depth of two meters. Noted that in such places, large bass, carp and bream come to the point of reflux for a minimum period of time. Then, after analyzing, I realized what it is: the bait consisted of fish meal, containing up to 60% protein. To attract large predatory fish particularly in cold water, protein is used additionally also to improve the nutritional properties of the bait. This Supplement can be used both separately and as a basis for making homemade baits.
One of these days I used a new bait with hemp seeds, flavored anise oil. Here I managed to take the “average” carp weighing 2.3 kg. With the German line-bundle with a diameter of 0.22, which is cautious carp does not see, as the line merges with bloom water of the Creek, and bait in the form of bloodworms I got him a float tackle from the shore, probably this one from experienced anglers is not particularly surprising. Interesting preferences of fish in this place and at this time, if you remember fishing conditions: the river with the current, cold running water. As demersal fish, carp feed on insect larvae, mollusks, worms, steamed corn and grain. Also comments on the cake and even partial to boiled potatoes. He could not ignore and anise smell.

He stands near the river channel pits and ditches with rough bottoms, fits to snag shores — these are areas almost everywhere is decorated with Ust-CAPSA. Here I expected to meet him. However, this fish is not as simple as it seems. We can say that carp are not a homebody, he can sometimes migrate over long distances, this is due to the change in the level of water and fodder.
The best time to fish was early in the morning and evening dawn. However, the evening dawn in these places was difficult because of the mosquitoes and gnats. The weather was cloudy but without rain, so on the morning dawn I was able to expect longer the bite, and in the evening, I probably scared off the big fish constant distractions at a gnat. And this is when a serious attitude is unacceptable.

I knew this tactic, so don’t give the carp of the slack, but they shouldn’t overdo it, strongly pulling on the fishing line. So it is necessary aggressively to shore in advance under the water lowering the landing net, the fish is induced. It is all important to perform well, despite the fact that the carp takes the bait securely. I want to remind you that fishing for carp — a lesson for the patient, if you are sure that you are on carp.
Analyzing the importance of well-matched baiting, I was just thinking about the preferences of the fish, and the methods of delivery of the lure in fishing. There is reason to believe that the fish remember the smell of their homes, figuratively — the taste of water, into which I was born. Remembering that minnow, as a representative of cyprinid fish, are sensitive to the smell of rose oil, dissolved in water to sugar and generally “feels” the chemical composition of the water, I have prepared such a bait. Rose oil can be obtained from small samples (15-30 ml), which are sold in the Church benches. At least I bought them there.
The experience of knowing a lower efficiency of bait in the form of balls, I still did not stop to this experiment on the backwaters of Ust-Capsi. The decline in the popularity from the local fishermen “bait balls” is not always and everywhere due to local conditions. In this case there is also an alternative. It is expressed in the practice of casting bait in the form of mixtures of a complex composition with clay. The composition may include wheat bran, oatmeal, sunflower seed cake, steamed peas, rye, barley with additions of vanilla, anise, dried bloodworms, Daphnia, gammarus crustacean — with subsequent cementation by clay. On this bait I was approached by a roach and bream.
On most available bodies of water found large and cautious fish that requires constant adjustment of fishing tactics and complementary feeding. The need for a large amount of bait which you can collect in the area catching a lot of small and greedy fish disappears. The so-called starting zakim, consisting of several dozen “balls”, is already impossible, and inefficient, perhaps, except in special cases sport fishing. Therefore, the change of “mass” casting bait balls came “innovative” trough-rocket, allowing to quickly lure any kind of bait (up to a liquid). A bird feeder can usually deliver with great accuracy to the location on the river or lake.
A good alternative to the trough in the form of a rocket can be bait in boilies. I have tested baits with the scent of plums. And yet, it often happens that “balls” can be a lure several times faster than using any feeders-missiles. Sometimes it should be used. However, one must keep in mind that the noise of falling water heavy balls still scares wary of large fish, which mainly focused angler.
