A journey through Albania is simply meaningless without the arrival in this wonderful place. Walking around the city, immersed in an atmosphere of absolute medieval walls, streets, bridges and buildings over the last century, little has changed. I did not even know that something like that can still be found in Europe.
In Berat there is only one hotel which ever there are no available rooms, but enterprising locals is hardly just leave you on the street.
During the heyday of the Ottoman Empire, the city occupied a very important place in the life of the state and was a center of handicraft art.
In particular, Berat is famous for its craftsmen of wood carving and other woodworking.
In the Balkans, this city is considered one of the most well-preserved typical settlements of the Ottoman Empire.
Visually, Berat stands out for its traditional houses in the Balkan style. Two story house with a first floor made of stone and painted white second floor, covered with the classic red ceramic tiles.
All the houses a large number of wooden Windows, and due to the density and steepness of the hill when viewed from the side, the Windows are arranged in rows one above the other. The district of Berat and received the name “city of thousand Windows”.
