Puma Punku is a complex of megalithic structures in Bolivia, which is located 72 km from La Paz city. Faced with megalithic blocks of the mound has dimensions of 167 to 117 meters. According to the conducted radiocarbon analysis of the bottom layer of the mound, Puma Punku was built in 536-600 years BC.
Puma Punku in Quechua means the Door of the Puma. The absence of any historical information about this place does not allow to say exactly about its purpose. Moreover, the stone blocks of the complex are greatly affected by time, many of them have been wrapped for use in the construction of the railway.
The stone blocks of Puma Punku are striking for their shapes and sizes. The large block has a weight of about 131 tons and the size is 7.81 m x 5,17 m x 1,07 m. however, as studies have shown that large blocks were transported to this place from the stone quarry, located at a distance of 10 km. the smaller Blocks were taken from a distance of about 90 km. How it was done for scientists still remains a mystery.
The stone blocks of Puma Punku are more like giant Legos. They have a clear geometric cutouts that allows you to tightly join them together without using cement. Many blocks are made on a standard form that allows us to speak about their mass production.
It is considered that at the time Puma Punku was an important cultural and spiritual center. However, evidence that there was permanent settlement was found.
