Doctors have tested whether tomatoes are good for blood vessels

Медики проверили, действительно ли помидоры полезны для сосудовThe doctors found out what action on the body have tomatoes.

Many of the beneficial properties attributed to the products are in fact just a myth, but a scientific study of how tomatoes affect the circulatory system, confirmed that the scarlet fruits are really healing. Scientists have proven that tomatoes help to recover the vessels and arteries that have been damaged because of cardiovascular disorders.

Eating tomatoes and tomato paste useful for blood, it was argued earlier. This time, scientists have shown that tomatoes are really healing for vessels, owing to the contained in them lycopene. Confirming the results of the new researchers were published in the journal PLoS ONE.

Lycopene is a plant pigment with antioxidant, i.e. protects cells from destructive to their oxidation properties. Researchers carried out an experiment in which participants received either a preparation containing lycopene, or a placebo. The subjects were as healthy people, and those who had a history of cardiovascular disease and taking statins.

The experiment found that lycopene has a significant effect with respect to the weakened blood vessels and arteries.

“Sick people treated with lycopene, the permeability of blood vessels increased by 53%,” – said the authors.

They noted that lycopene, which helps to recover the damaged vessels, is not only in tomatoes but also in watermelon.

In addition, the researchers hypothesized that the presence of tomato makes the Mediterranean diet so healthy. It has been scientifically proven that adhering to this diet, people are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases. This fact is scientists, about which wrote PLoS ONE, associated with they found the effect of lycopene, high content of different tomatoes used in the Mediterranean type of food.
